Road trips from Orlando

Park fatigue is real and it usually arrives on day five. Ten hours on your feet in Florida heat, repeated, wears down adults and children at about the same rate, and the families who enjoy a fortnight most are the ones who put a break in the middle of it rather than pushing through and arguing about it.

Geography makes that break easy. Orlando sits almost exactly in the centre of the peninsula, so the Gulf coast is around two hours west and the Atlantic beaches an hour east. Nothing on this page is further than four hours away, and three of the four routes have no tolls at all.

You are already paying for the hire car, which is the other half of the argument. It is insured, it is sitting on the drive, and a beach day costs you the fuel and the parking rather than four theme park tickets. For a family of four, a day on the Gulf comes in at well under a tenth of a day at a park.

One point applies to all four. Drive times quoted here are off peak, and I-4 through Orlando plus the Tampa or Miami approach at the far end can add 45 minutes to any of them. Leaving before 8am is the single most effective thing you can do to make one of these days work.

Clearwater is the default and it has earned that. It is the closest good beach, the drive is 105 easy miles with no tolls, and there is enough at the far end to fill a day without moving the car twice. Families with teenagers, and anyone doing this for the first time, should start here.

Wanting the beach without the resort front points you at Anna Maria. A free trolley runs the length of the island, the buildings stop at 40ft, and the pace is closer to a Cornish village than a Florida strip. It is 30 minutes further than Clearwater and feels an hour quieter than that.

Shell hunters, cyclists and anyone who wants a real change of gear should look at Sanibel. It is also the route that punishes a day trip hardest, at three hours each way plus a causeway queue. Give it two nights or leave it for another holiday.

Miami is the city option and a completely different sort of day out. Art deco, Cuban food, street art and a proper skyline, reached down 235 miles of cashless toll road. Sort the transponder out at the rental desk and it is straightforward. Ignore that and it gets expensive by post weeks after you are home.

Small children change the maths on all of them. Under fives generally do better with the shorter Gulf runs, where the water is shallow and calm and the drive is under two and a half hours. Anna Maria and Clearwater both work, and Miami rarely does.

Weather can decide it for you on the morning. Storms build inland over Orlando in summer and often leave the Gulf coast dry, so a poor looking forecast at the villa is not a reason to cancel. It happens the other way too, and the coast can be wet while the parks stay clear.

Party size matters more than people expect. Two families sharing one villa often want different days out, and the beach trips split neatly: one car goes to the coast while the other takes the younger children to a park with early closing. Anna Maria and Clearwater are the two routes below with free parking, so neither half of the group has to commit to a booking in advance.

Budget usually settles the argument. A beach day for four costs roughly 90 to 140 dollars all in, counting fuel, parking and a casual lunch. Four theme park tickets for the same day run to more than 600. That gap is the reason these pages exist.

Trip length changes what is worth doing. On a seven night holiday one beach day is about right, and it should be one of the close ones. On a fourteen night stay there is room for two coast days and an overnight, and that is the length at which Sanibel and Miami start to make sense rather than feeling like an endurance test.

An overnight costs less than most people assume, because the coastal towns price nothing like Orlando. A mid range room on the Gulf outside high season often comes in under the price of a park ticket, and what you are buying with it is four hours of driving you no longer have to do. Adding the hire car to the room is where the saving sits. Booking a night away and the car for the whole fortnight as one package brings a package discount into play, and the route pages show that saving against the total rather than leaving you to work it out. Dates move prices more than anything else on this coast. Winter is high season on the Gulf and summer is high season nowhere except in the sense that the parks are full, so a night on Sanibel in February and the same room in August can differ by a factor of two. Searching your own dates is the only way to know.

Two families in one villa often split an overnight rather than sharing it, taking a night each on different days so that somebody is always at the house. That works well with the shorter Gulf runs and badly with Miami, where the driving makes a single night poor value.

Cancellation terms are worth reading on a room booked months ahead for a day trip you may reschedule. Refundable rates cost a little more and are usually the right call for a night that depends on the weather, on park hours, or on how the family is holding up by day six.
