Two distinct neighbourhoods make up the property and they feel like different hotels. Magnolia Bend is the grand version, with white-columned plantation-style mansions set among clipped lawns and oak trees. Alligator Bayou is the rustic version, with tin-roofed cottages tucked under dense planting and boardwalks that feel a long way from a theme park. Riverside takes the rural Mississippi as its subject, and it commits properly.

Understanding the Port Orleans split saves a great deal of confusion, and UK customers get this wrong more often than any other Disney booking. Port Orleans is a single resort in two halves. Riverside is the big one, roughly three times the size of its neighbour, with a table service restaurant, six swimming areas and rooms that can take five people. Port Orleans French Quarter, fifteen minutes upriver on foot or a short boat ride away, is the small compact New Orleans-themed half with one pool and no restaurant. Guests at either half may use the facilities at both.

Scale is the trade. Riverside gives you far more to do and far more choice of where to eat, and it charges you in walking distance. A room at the far end of Magnolia Bend is a proper hike from the main building, and internal bus stops exist in both neighbourhoods precisely because of that. Ask for a location that suits your party rather than leaving it to chance.

Early Theme Park Entry applies to every guest at Riverside. You get into any of the four theme parks 30 minutes before the published opening time on every morning of your stay, on identical terms to a family paying deluxe rates across the road at Saratoga Springs.

Extended Evening Hours do not apply and never have. Those late-night sessions at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are limited to Deluxe and Deluxe Villa guests. Port Orleans sits in the moderate tier, so treat any claim to the contrary as a reason to question the rest of the quote.

Alligator Bayou rooms are the ones that make Riverside unusual, because some of them include a child-size pull-down bed in addition to the two queen beds. That takes the occupancy to five, and in the Disney moderate tier that is close to unique. For a British family of five facing the choice between two rooms at a value resort or one room here, the sums frequently come out in Riverside's favour.

Magnolia Bend rooms sit inside the mansion buildings and feel more formal, with interior corridors and grander surroundings. Within Magnolia Bend, the Royal Guest Rooms carry a Princess and the Frog theme, with regal detailing, ornate headboards and touches drawn from Tiana and her friends. They are the reason a good number of families book Riverside over Caribbean Beach, and they command a premium accordingly.

Standard rooms across both neighbourhoods are sold for up to four guests unless the pull-down bed is included, and Disney lists the exact bed configuration against your chosen dates on the booking page. Check that panel carefully if the fifth bed is the reason you are booking, because not every Alligator Bayou room has one and the category name on the booking screen is what governs it.

Every room includes a small fridge, a coffee maker, a safe, a hairdryer and daily housekeeping. Views are sold by category, covering standard, garden, pool and river-facing options, and preferred locations sit closer to the main building at Riverside Mill. Accessible rooms are available in both neighbourhoods and should be requested at the point of booking.

Choosing between the two neighbourhoods is a genuine decision rather than a formality. Alligator Bayou is leafier, more atmospheric and holds the five-person rooms. Magnolia Bend is smarter, has interior corridors and holds the Royal Guest Rooms. Families with young children often prefer the bayou, while couples and grandparents tend to prefer the mansions, and neither answer is wrong.

Cross one of three wooden bridges onto a wooded island and you are at the best pool in the moderate tier. Ol' Man Island covers 3.5 acres, built as though a sawmill had been abandoned and the river had taken it back, with a 95 foot rustic waterslide running out of the millworks, a whirlpool tub and a kiddie pool. Muddy Rivers pool bar keeps the adults supplied.

A catch-and-release fishing hole sits on the same island, inspired by Tom Sawyer, and it is a proper novelty for children who have run out of patience with queues. All fishing at Walt Disney World is catch and release. Bring nothing, since the tackle is provided, and go early in the morning when the resort is quiet and the water is still.

Five leisure pools are dotted through the neighbourhoods, three in Alligator Bayou and two in Magnolia Bend. None has a slide, and that is exactly the point. Families staying at the far end of either neighbourhood frequently end up using their local pool far more than the headline one, because it is thirty seconds from the door and there is always a free lounger.

Bike and surrey hire operates from the marina, and the riverside paths make a genuinely pleasant circuit for a morning run or an evening walk. Towels are provided at the pools and lifeguards are on duty during posted hours. Riverside is one of the few moderate resorts where a rest day genuinely works, because there is enough to fill it without leaving the grounds. Add the walk upriver to French Quarter and back, and you have an afternoon that costs nothing and involves no buses at all.

Port Orleans French Quarter is the nearest thing of interest and it belongs on your itinerary even though you are not sleeping there. Beignets at Sassagoula Floatworks, live jazz at Scat Cat's Club and the sea serpent slide at Doubloon Lagoon are all open to Riverside guests, and the walk along the river takes fifteen minutes.

Disney Springs is a five minute drive or a slow, enjoyable boat ride away, with no admission charge, dozens of restaurants, cinemas, live music and a two-storey World of Disney store. It is the standard arrival evening plan for UK families still working through the five hour time difference, and the boat makes it far more appealing than it is from a bus-only resort.

Typhoon Lagoon water park and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort sit close by, and Disney's Old Key West is a stop on the same boat route. Theme park distances are moderate in every direction, with Animal Kingdom the longest run by road, so build those days around a single park rather than hopping.

Off property, Highway 535 and Highway 192 hold the supermarkets, pharmacies and chain restaurants that keep a British family's costs sensible, with Publix the usual choice for breakfast supplies. Universal Orlando is around 10 miles north up Interstate 4, roughly 20 minutes outside rush hour. Clearwater Beach on the Gulf coast is about 95 miles west and makes a comfortable day out for anyone with a car and a spare morning.

Families of five are the group Riverside serves better than almost any Disney resort at this price. A pull-down bed in the right Alligator Bayou room keeps everybody under one roof, one room key and one budget line, and it removes the awkward choice between two value rooms and a deluxe upgrade. Confirm the bed configuration on your dates before you book, since not every room in the neighbourhood has it.

Parents of children who love princesses will find the Royal Guest Rooms at Magnolia Bend do a lot of heavy lifting. Regal detailing and Tiana touches turn the room itself into part of the holiday, which pays off on the afternoons when everybody is too hot and too tired to go anywhere.

Couples and grandparents get a surprisingly good deal here. River Roost with the cabaret pianist, Boatwright's for dinner, a walk along the river to French Quarter for jazz, and the option of a boat to Disney Springs make for a proper evening without a bus in sight. Ask for Magnolia Bend and interior corridors if that is your party.

Guests who want short walks should think twice. Riverside is a large site and a room at the far end of either neighbourhood involves real distance to the food court and the buses. Internal bus stops help, and a preferred room solves it, but if minimal walking is the priority then French Quarter across the river is the better half to book.

Anyone chasing the flashiest transport should also look elsewhere. There is no Skyliner and no monorail here, and the boat goes to Disney Springs rather than to a theme park. Riverside sells atmosphere, space, a fifth bed and a genuinely good evening, and it does all four better than the resorts that outshine it on paper.
