Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa

Nothing here shouts. Clapboard buildings in soft greens and creams sit under wide verandas, with wrought iron, fountains and equestrian details through the grounds, taking their theme from the racing and mineral spring towns of upstate New York in the late nineteenth century. Compared with a themed value resort it is almost restrained, which is either the appeal or the objection depending on who is travelling.

Geography defines the stay. Saratoga Springs sits directly across the water from Disney Springs, wrapped around the Lake Buena Vista golf course, and it is divided into named neighbourhoods: Congress Park, The Springs, The Carousel, The Paddock, The Grandstand and the separate Treehouse Villas. Distances between them are substantial. Which section you are given changes your holiday more than the room category does.

Disney Vacation Club owns the whole property, so every guest is in accommodation with at least a kitchenette and most have a full kitchen. On a 14 night British holiday that is not a minor amenity. It is the difference between four people eating out three times a day and a family that shops once, eats breakfast at home and goes out properly in the evening.

Early Theme Park Entry applies as it does at every Walt Disney World hotel, putting your party in a park 30 minutes before the published opening time on every morning of the stay. Extended Evening Hours come with the Deluxe Villa tier, so you are eligible for the late sessions at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. Saratoga Springs is among the more affordable routes into that benefit.

Disney Springs across the water is the resort's real anchor. You can reach it by boat or on foot over the bridge from Congress Park, which effectively hands you dozens of restaurants, a cinema and a huge shop as your local high street. Very few Disney hotels solve the evening question that neatly.

Cost out the Deluxe Studios first, since that is the entry category and where most UK families start. Sleeping arrangements are built around a queen bed plus additional sleeping surfaces, and layouts vary between villas, so check the bed configuration shown on the booking page for your dates rather than assuming. Cooking is by kitchenette, with a small fridge, a microwave, a sink and a coffee maker, which handles cereal, milk, cold drinks and reheating last night's leftovers.

One Bedroom Villas are where the category earns its price. You get a bedroom behind a proper door, a full kitchen with a cooker, a full-size fridge and a dishwasher, a separate living and dining area, a washer and dryer inside the villa and a whirlpool bath. Two weeks of park clothes in Florida humidity generate a startling amount of washing, and a machine behind your own front door means the family packs for a week and washes twice.

Two Bedroom Villas add a Deluxe Studio to the one bedroom layout, giving two bathrooms and space for two couples or a family travelling with grandparents. Three Bedroom Grand Villas sit at the top for the largest parties across two storeys, and inventory is small enough that they need booking a long way ahead.

Treehouse Villas are a different proposition entirely and confuse a lot of first-time bookers. They are standalone three bedroom units raised on stilts in woodland at the far end of the property, with their own kitchen, laundry, deck and a layout that suits a large party or two families travelling together. They also sit a long way from the main resort buildings, served by an internal bus. Refurbishment programmes have affected them, so confirm availability and current status when you book.

Section allocation is a booking request worth making. Congress Park puts you closest to the walking bridge for Disney Springs. The Springs surrounds the main pool, the restaurants and the shop. The Paddock and The Grandstand are quieter and further out with their own pools and bus stops. Say what matters to you at booking, and repeat it at check-in.

Get down before eleven or after four if you want a lounger in the shade in August, because this is the busiest spot on the property. High Rock Spring Pool is the main pool, built into rockwork meant to suggest the mineral springs the theme is named after, with a water slide running through the rocks, zero-depth entry for toddlers, whirlpool spas alongside and a large deck.

A second feature pool serves The Paddock section further out, with its own slide and a water play area, which is exactly why families given a villa on that side of the resort tend to stay put rather than trekking to the main pool. Three leisure pools cover the Treehouse Villas, Congress Park and The Grandstand, each with a whirlpool spa and hardly ever a crowd.

Activities on the daily schedule include themed pool parties, pool games, relays and trivia, all listed in the My Disney Experience app. Lifeguards work posted hours, towels are provided at the pools, and both slides carry height requirements, so check them before promising anything to a small child.

Senses, A Disney Spa is part of the resort's name and its identity, offering treatments in surroundings themed on the New York mineral springs. Availability has varied and at times the spa has shown as taking no reservations, so confirm its current status before building a treatment day into the plan. Alongside it there is a fitness centre, a games arcade, tennis and basketball courts, a playground and bike hire for the paths.

Golf is the other draw. Disney's Lake Buena Vista course wraps around the resort with its clubhouse on site, which is unusual at Walt Disney World and worth knowing if a round is part of the trip. Walking and running paths loop the property past water and fairways, and early mornings here before the heat are one of the quiet pleasures of staying somewhere this green.

Disney Springs is the neighbour that defines the address. Two levels of shopping, a huge World of Disney store, cinemas, live music and dozens of restaurants sit across the water with no admission charge, reachable on foot from Congress Park or by boat from the landings. Guests here use it several times a fortnight rather than once, which changes how much on-site dining you actually need.

Typhoon Lagoon water park is close by, and Disney's Old Key West Resort sits just along the Sassagoula River, sharing the same quiet, green corner of Walt Disney World. Disney's Lake Buena Vista golf course wraps around the resort itself with the clubhouse on site.

Theme parks are all a bus ride away and none is especially close. Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom each sit within a reasonable coach journey, but this is not a resort where you pop back to the villa at lunchtime and return easily. Plan full park days or full rest days rather than splitting the difference.

Off property, the shops and supermarkets around Lake Buena Vista, Palm Parkway and Highway 535 are roughly 2 to 3 miles east, which makes this one of the easiest Disney resorts for a grocery run. Publix is where most British families end up for breakfast supplies, drinks and washing powder. Universal Orlando is about 11 miles north east on Interstate 4, 20 to 25 minutes outside rush hour and longer inside it.

Anyone with a hire car and a free day should know that Clearwater Beach on the Gulf coast is around 95 miles west, a comfortable morning's drive on Interstate 4 and a sensible reset halfway through a fortnight of parks.

Families staying a fortnight are the natural audience. A one bedroom villa with a full kitchen, a washing machine, a living room and a balcony changes what two weeks in Florida feels like, and Saratoga Springs is usually among the cheaper ways to get all of that inside the Disney bubble.

Anyone who loves Disney Springs should book Congress Park and never look back. Walking to dinner, walking home afterwards, and doing it three or four times in a fortnight without waiting for a bus is a genuine quality of life upgrade over almost every other Disney hotel.

Large parties are unusually well served. Two Bedroom Villas give two bathrooms, Three Bedroom Grand Villas keep a big group under one roof, and the Treehouse Villas out in the woodland handle parties that would otherwise be split across three hotel rooms. Confirm the Treehouse Villas are open on your dates before setting your heart on them.

Golfers, spa users and repeat visitors who no longer need to see everything tend to be happiest here. Quiet paths, a course on the doorstep and a green, residential feel matter more once the pressure to tick off four parks has gone.

First-time visitors with young children should weigh it up honestly. Everything is by bus, the site is very large, and there is no walking route to a park, no gondola and no monorail. A family determined to do Magic Kingdom hard with a toddler will find the logistics easier at a monorail resort or at Wilderness Lodge. Anyone with mobility needs should book a villa in The Springs or Congress Park rather than taking whatever is allocated.
