Disney's Wilderness Lodge

Walk in off the coach and you are standing under timber columns that rise seven storeys to a beamed roof, with a stone fireplace running 82 feet up the wall at one end and the geological strata of the Grand Canyon worked into its layers. Tribal patterned rugs cover the floors and rocking chairs sit on the balconies looking down. What you are inside is a scaled-down retelling of the great national park lodges of the Pacific Northwest, and it is the most convincing piece of hotel theming on Walt Disney World property. People book here and then find they do not want to leave the building.

Water is the other theme. A spring bubbles up inside the lobby floor, runs out through the doors, widens into a creek across the grounds and drops into Bay Lake as a waterfall by the pool. Fire Rock Geyser erupts on the hour beside it, which is exactly the sort of detail that makes children believe the place is real.

Transport works differently here to the other Magic Kingdom area hotels. There is no monorail and there never has been. Boats cross Bay Lake to Magic Kingdom, and separate water routes link the lodge with Fort Wilderness and the Contemporary. Buses handle EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, the water parks and Disney Springs.

Deluxe pricing brings the full set of perks. Early Theme Park Entry gives every Disney resort guest 30 minutes in a park before the published opening, every day, at every price tier. Extended Evening Hours are the Deluxe and Deluxe Villa exclusive, running late at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT on selected nights, and staying here qualifies you for them.

Two Disney Vacation Club sections share the site. Boulder Ridge Villas occupy the older wing, styled on a railway era lodge, and Copper Creek Villas sit within and beside the main building. Studios in both have a kitchenette and the larger villas have a full kitchen and a washer and dryer inside, which matters enormously on a fortnight. Both are booked separately and have their own pages.

View category is where your money goes here, and it is worth spending. Courtyard view rooms face the creek, the lawns and the pool area, and that is the category most families end up in. Standard view rooms look over the car park, the roofline or the woodland behind, while nature and lake view rooms look out over the trees or across Bay Lake towards the Contemporary. Hotel rooms sit in the two wings that curve out from the main lobby, and almost all of them have a balcony or a patio.

Room decor picks up the lodge theme without hammering it, with timber furniture, patterned fabrics and artwork drawn from the Pacific Northwest and the national parks. Balconies on the upper floors of the courtyard wings are the pick of the hotel, because you can sit out at dusk with the creek below and watch Fire Rock Geyser go off on the hour.

Club level rooms occupy the top floor with a private lounge and concierge team, serving food and drink through the day. Given how much time people end up spending in this building rather than in the parks, that upgrade earns its keep here more than it does at some of the other Deluxe hotels.

Do not assume a bed configuration. Layouts vary by category and by dates, and the booking page shows exactly what is in the room you are pricing, so check it there rather than trusting a floor plan from a forum. Maximum occupancy is published against each category, and larger parties should compare the villas next door before booking two hotel rooms.

Every room includes a small fridge, coffee maker, safe, hairdryer and daily housekeeping. Bunk bed rooms have existed in some categories here over the years, so if that is something your children would love, ask when you book rather than assuming. Rooms overlooking Copper Creek Springs Pool are lively until it closes, and light sleepers should ask for a higher floor away from the water.

Fire Rock Geyser erupts beside the pool on the hour, and children will watch it for the whole first day. Copper Creek Springs Pool is the main one, built into the rockwork where the creek drops towards Bay Lake, with a 67 foot waterslide running through the rocks and zero depth entry at one end for toddlers. Hot and cold whirlpool spas sit alongside with shaded seating around them.

Quieter swimming exists a short walk away. Boulder Ridge Cove Pool sits over on the Boulder Ridge Villas side and has no slide, no music and usually plenty of free loungers, and there is a further pool at the villas themselves. Families with mixed ages tend to split the two, sending the teenagers to the slide and taking a book to the Cove.

Nature is the recreation theme and it is done properly. Walking and nature trails run through the pine woodland and along the shore, a path leads to Fort Wilderness for anyone who fancies the walk, and there are rocking chairs set out where the creek runs past. Bike hire, an arcade, a fitness centre and marina hire on Bay Lake fill out the rest, and fishing excursions leave from the boat dock.

Evenings are the strong point. Campfire style sessions and outdoor film screenings run on the lawns on selected nights, Electrical Water Pageant passes the beach at a set time, and the Magic Kingdom fireworks are audible and partly visible from the shoreline. Flag family duty, where a guest family is invited to raise the flags on the roof in the morning, has long been one of the small traditions here and is worth asking the desk about.

Practical notes. Lifeguards are on duty during posted hours and towels are provided at the pools. Daily activity lists and pool hours appear in My Disney Experience each morning. Swimming in Bay Lake itself is not permitted, and the beach is for sitting and watching rather than paddling.

Fort Wilderness is the immediate neighbour, reachable by boat or on foot along a woodland path, and it is worth an evening in its own right. Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue at Pioneer Hall is the long running dinner show, the Tri-Circle-D Ranch has horses and pony rides, and the campfire singalong with Chip and Dale runs most nights and costs nothing to attend.

Magic Kingdom sits across Bay Lake and is the only park with a direct water link from here. Being able to leave after the fireworks and be on a boat rather than in a coach queue is the practical advantage of this hotel, and the crossing back in the dark with the castle behind you is a nicer end to a day than any bus journey.

Contemporary is a short boat ride across the lake and gives you California Grill on its top floor, Steakhouse 71 on its ground floor and the monorail loop out to the Polynesian Village and the Grand Floridian. Treat that as your route to the rest of the Magic Kingdom area hotels, because going by bus involves a change and takes far longer than it should.

Disney Springs is about 8 miles south east and roughly 20 to 25 minutes by bus, free to enter, with the two storey World of Disney shop, cinemas and a long list of restaurants. Arrival evening is the right slot for it, before anyone has adjusted to the time difference.

Off property, Highway 192 in Kissimmee is around 12 miles south with the supermarkets and pharmacies that keep a fortnight affordable. Universal Orlando is roughly 14 miles north east on Interstate 4, about 25 minutes outside the rush hour. Clearwater Beach on the Gulf coast is around 95 miles west, a comfortable morning's drive for anyone with a spare day and a hire car.

Anyone who wants a Deluxe hotel with atmosphere rather than a Deluxe hotel with a monorail should look here first. Wilderness Lodge generally prices below Contemporary, Polynesian Village and the Grand Floridian while giving you the best themed lobby on Walt Disney World property, a boat to Magic Kingdom and pine woodland instead of a car park. For a lot of British couples it is the sweet spot.

Families with primary school age children do very well. Fire Rock Geyser, the 67 foot slide, the campfires and the path through the woods to Fort Wilderness give you enough to fill a rest day without leaving the property, and Whispering Canyon Cafe is exactly the sort of noisy nonsense that eight year olds remember for years.

Multi-generational groups should weigh the boat carefully. Journeys are lovely and the site is compact, but boarding a launch with a wheelchair, a buggy and a grandparent on a wet evening is a different proposition to stepping onto a monorail. Boulder Ridge Villas and Copper Creek Villas next door add full kitchens and in-villa laundry for a larger party, and both are worth pricing alongside two hotel rooms.

Teenagers are a mixed bag. There is a slide, an arcade and bike hire, but no walk to a park and no monorail to give them independence, and the tone of the place is calm rather than lively. A fifteen year old who wants to come and go alone will be happier at the Contemporary.

Anyone building a trip around EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Universal is paying for scenery rather than convenience. Buses south are ordinary and the water routes only help with Magic Kingdom. For a Magic Kingdom heavy holiday, or for anyone who genuinely wants to sit still for an afternoon in a beautiful building, few Disney hotels do it better.
