Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge

Log cabin rather than grand lodge is the idea in this wing, with railway memorabilia, quilts and a lobby fireplace that feels like a Montana hunting lodge in the 1920s, deliberately different from the great timber hall next door. Boulder Ridge Villas occupies its own wing on the south side of Disney's Wilderness Lodge, reached along an internal corridor from the main lobby. Disney Vacation Club opened it in 2000 as the Lodge's first villa building.

Quiet is the defining quality. Where the main Lodge lobby fills with day visitors photographing the eight storey atrium and the Fire Rock Geyser going off on the hour, the villa wing keeps its own front door, its own lift lobby and its own pool. Guests who have stayed at both wings usually describe Boulder Ridge as the calmer half of the resort, and that is exactly why regulars keep booking it.

Villa accommodation is the practical reason to choose it over a standard deluxe room. Deluxe Studios come with a kitchenette. One and two bedroom villas come with a full kitchen and a washer and dryer inside the villa. For a British family doing 14 nights, that means breakfast at your own table, a fridge full of drinks rather than a hotel minibar, and clean park clothes without a per item laundry bill.

Every guest at every Walt Disney World hotel gets Early Theme Park Entry, 30 minutes in a park before the published opening time, every single morning. Deluxe Villa guests get Extended Evening Hours on top, the late night sessions Disney runs at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT for Deluxe and Deluxe Villa guests only. Coming back on a near empty boat across Bay Lake at half eleven is one of the better hours of a Disney holiday.

What you give up is the monorail. Wilderness Lodge is not on the monorail loop and never has been, so Magic Kingdom means a boat and everything else means a bus. Anyone who wants to hop in and out of Magic Kingdom six times a day should look at the monorail resorts instead. Everyone else finds the boat a pleasure rather than a chore.

Deluxe Studios are the smallest category and the busiest to book, so know what you are committing a family to before you take one. You get a kitchenette rather than a full kitchen, so a fridge, a microwave, a sink and a coffee maker, which handles breakfast and cold drinks but not cooking. There is no washer or dryer in a studio, and shared laundry facilities cover you instead. Bed layouts vary between refurbished units, so check the configuration shown on the booking page for your dates.

One Bedroom Villas are the sweet spot for most families of four staying two weeks. A bedroom with a door that closes, a separate living area, a full kitchen with a hob, oven and dishwasher, and a washer and dryer in the villa. Parents who have spent a fortnight whispering in the dark in a standard hotel room understand immediately why this category exists.

Two Bedroom Villas add a second bedroom and a second bathroom, and Disney sells them both as dedicated units and as a studio locked off from a one bedroom, which is why the layout you see can differ. Confirm what you are booking at the point of reservation rather than assuming, particularly if the bathroom count matters to your group.

Boulder Ridge does not have three bedroom Grand Villas. If you need that much space at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, the Grand Villas are in the Copper Creek wing, and the Copper Creek Cascade Cabins sleep larger parties again. Comparing the two villa wings before you book is worth 20 minutes of anyone's time.

Views are sold as Standard View and various upgraded categories, and the outlook here tends to be woodland, courtyard or the villa wing's own pool rather than a headline vista. Balconies are a real feature and the pine trees are genuinely tall. Cots and bed rails are available on request, and accessible villas exist in the smaller categories.

Somewhere to read a book without a water polo match breaking out beside you is worth far more on day nine than it sounds on day one. Boulder Ridge Cove Pool belongs to the villa wing and is the quiet pool of the resort: no slide, no crowd, just a heated pool, a whirlpool spa and loungers under the pines. Parents with toddlers end up here every afternoon.

Copper Creek Springs Pool is the main resort pool, shared by every guest at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, and it has the 67 foot water slide built into the rocks plus hot and cold whirlpool spas. Having both pools available is the practical advantage of staying in the villas. Children get the slide, adults get somewhere calm to retreat to, and the two are a few minutes apart on foot.

Recreation at the Lodge leans outdoors in a way that suits families who have had enough of queueing. Bike hire, a marina with boat rentals, fishing outings on Bay Lake, a beach for sitting on and campfire sessions in the evening all run from the resort. Swimming in the lake is not permitted anywhere at Walt Disney World, so the beach is for paddling your feet and watching the boats.

Evening activities are a genuine strength here. Movies under the stars run on the lawn on selected nights, the campfire and marshmallow toasting is free, and the Fire Rock Geyser erupts on the hour beside the main pool for as long as the children want to keep watching. Community Hall in the villa wing lends games and runs craft sessions on wet afternoons.

Boats across to Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort open up horse riding, archery, the wagon rides and the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue dinner show. Making an afternoon of that is one of the best non park days on Disney property, and it costs you nothing but the boat ride to go and look.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort sits directly across the water and is the closest neighbour by a distance. Horse riding at the Tri Circle D Ranch, archery, wagon rides, the evening campfire with Chip and Dale and the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue dinner show all live there, and the boat is complimentary. Families with children between six and twelve get more out of that one afternoon than out of a lot of paid attractions.

Boats also run to Disney's Contemporary Resort, which unlocks the monorail loop for an evening. California Grill on the 15th floor, Steakhouse 71 and Chef Mickey's are all a short ride away, and from the Contemporary you can hop the monorail on to Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa without ever using a bus.

Magic Kingdom is the park you will use most from here, and its evening fireworks are audible from the Lodge's beach on a still night. Copper Creek Villas and Cabins share the same building complex, so comparing the two wings before booking is easy and sensible.

Disney Springs is around 20 minutes by bus and has the shops, the cinemas and a huge choice of restaurants with no admission charge. Save it for the arrival evening or a rest day. The nearest useful supermarket run is to the Publix stores around Lake Buena Vista, roughly 7 miles away, which matters if you have booked a villa with a kitchen.

Universal Orlando is about 15 miles north east on Interstate 4, usually 25 to 30 minutes by car outside the rush hour. Clearwater Beach on the Gulf coast is around 90 miles west and makes a good full day out if you have a hire car and a spare morning.

Families who want the deluxe experience without the deluxe noise are the core audience. Boulder Ridge gives you a quiet pool, a quiet corridor and a villa with a kitchen, and it does that at a Disney Vacation Club property where the same booking still gets Extended Evening Hours and Early Theme Park Entry. Parents of young children find it far easier to manage than a monorail resort at capacity.

Repeat visitors who have already done Magic Kingdom four times tend to love it most. Once the pressure to be at rope drop every morning has gone, a resort with a boat, a campfire, bike hire and Geyser Point becomes a place you actually spend time rather than a place you sleep.

Larger groups need to look carefully. Boulder Ridge tops out at two bedroom villas, so a party of eight or more is booking two units or moving across to the Copper Creek wing, where the Grand Villas and the Cascade Cabins take bigger numbers.

Anyone whose trip is weighted towards EPCOT and Hollywood Studios should weigh the bus times honestly. Those two parks are 25 to 30 minutes away by coach, and the EPCOT area resorts or the Skyliner hotels serve that pattern better. Wilderness Lodge earns its keep on Magic Kingdom days and on days you stay at the resort.

British families on a fortnight who plan to cook two or three nights a week and do their own washing should run the numbers before dismissing the price. Between the kitchen, the laundry and the free recreation, the daily spend at a villa resort tends to be lower than the headline rate implies.
